More Hurdles to Passing Senate Republican Health Care Bill

Media can't take their eyes off the ball on health care

That legislation would leave 32 million more people without coverage by 2026 and cause premiums to almost double, compared to current law, the CBO found.

And: CBO: Obamacare repeal would uninsure another 32 million, double premiums by 2026. While he and others are trying to sell this as a way to buy more time for developing a replacement plan-something Senate Republicans have failed to do for seven years-this plan would actually have a devastating impact on health care for millions of people right away.

Despite opposition from some Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this week there will be a vote to repeal Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump postponed the party's August recess until they come to a consensus to repeal Obamacare and replace it with their own Republican plans.

Even with Vice President Mike Pence's tie-breaking vote, no more than two Republicans could oppose a measure. It's also not clear which version of the GOP's repeal legislation would be destined for the Senate floor: a version that passed the House, a Senate GOP-drafted bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, or a version that would only repeal most of Obamacare without a replacement.

However, in other places-particularly rural communities-Hoff states that these insurance exchanges aren't as healthy; there aren't enough plans being offered, and prices are too high.

The CBO report estimated because the latest Republican legislation retains two of Obamacare taxes, it would result in a $420 billion deficit reduction by 2026. "I think I have to get them back", Mr Trump said on Monday to laughter in the room.

"Any senator who votes against starting debate is really telling America that you're fine with Obamacare", he said. Most of the Republican politicians have long vowed to repeal Obamacare. But the changes would see 22 million lose their insurance cover over the next decade. For the time being, it appears as if decisions about health care will continue to be made in the dark.

This bill, unveiled Wednesday afternoon, is meant to be a wake-up call for Republican senators, to serve as a reminder that a lot of them voted for it just two years ago.

Senators Susan Collins and Angus King were both meeting with medical groups in ME on Friday, and said the latest effort by Senate GOP leaders is being handled poorly. They want to make sure there is a replacement plan before repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen is pushing a plan she calls the Marketplace Certainty Act, which she says would provide stability to the individual insurance market, which Obamacare wrecked.
