White House committed to anti-Russian sanctions - spokesperson
19 Junio 2017, 05:01 | Crisanna Felipe
"The additional Iran and Russian Federation sanctions that passed today give the administration the necessary tools to deter threats from these regimes", said Sen.
The House has yet to take up the measure, which is an amendment to a bill that tightens sanctions on Iran for its ballistic missile tests. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives.
Other sanctions have been introduced for the country's alleged interference in the USA presidential election. Ben Cardin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN. "I have no idea" if the White House is adequately concerned about Russian intervention in last year's election, Corker added, but "hopefully the White House will acknowledge" the massive level of Senate support for new sanctions against Russia.
Earlier Moscow said that the plans of the American senators threaten to turn into a new "sanctions peak".

The review mechanism was styled after 2015 legislation pushed by Republicans and approved overwhelmingly in the Senate that gave Congress a vote on whether President Barack Obama could lift sanctions against Iran.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had encouraged the Senate to hold off on more sanctions, saying that he'd like more time to try and work diplomacy with Russian Federation. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said the plan left him with no good choice. "I think we struck a very good balance".
But the Senate moved forward anyway. "But look, this bill is going to become law", Corker told reporters on Wednesday.
Trump has said several times that he hoped to work with Russian Federation on fighting terrorism around the world, specifically the Islamic State group that has taken hold in Iraq and Syria.
The Trump administration has pushed back against the bill, and his fellow Republicans hold a commanding 238- to 193-seat majority in the chamber.
The punitive measures in the legislation are focused on various areas, including the Russian intelligence and defense sectors, parts of its energy sector, and its metals, mining, and railways economy. The Russia amendment was added to the sanctions bill in a 97-2 vote on Wednesday.
It's not clear what exact changes the White House wants to make to the bill, or that those changes would actually weaken the proposed penalties against Russian Federation, but Senate Democrats have been attempting to sound an alarm over just that possibility.
