Portugal sees Ronaldo fully focused on Confederations Cup

19 Junio 2017, 08:02 | Gerardo Tarin

A 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup group stage match between Portugal and Mexico ended in a 2-2 draw.

Ronaldo had earlier teed up Ricardo Quaresma for the opener, with Javier Hernandez's equaliser leading to a tight second half before a hectic finish. "He is motivated, just like me", said the 21-year-old Silva at a news conference ahead of Portugal's opening Confederations Cup match against Mexico today.

Both Confederation Cup games played on Sunday in Russian Federation left teams confused by decisions - reached more slowly than expected - by referees taking advice from assistants watching multiple replays.

Hector Moreno scored in added time to earn a point for the Mexicans five minutes after Cedric put the Portuguese in front.

In the first half, a Portugal goal was ruled out for offside but it was only when the replays were shown that we saw that there was no infringement for the goal itself, but rather when the initial free kick was taken 15 minutes prior. While last summer's combination of Nani, Quaresma and other veterans clearly works, a harsh reading would be that Portugal risk missing an opportunity to impose a coherent pattern of play for the long term.

Ronaldo made a great run from near midfield to set up Quaresma's 34th-minute goal.

Video assistant referees are in action at the Confederations Cup, and they instantly chalked off Gomes's goal. Subs: G. Dos Santos 6, Araujo 6, Peralta 6. Pepe scored a rebound after Ronaldo hit the crossbar in the 20th minute, but VAR determined that Pepe was offside on the initial shot. The teams drew 0-0 in a friendly in 1969, and in 2014 Portugal won 1-0 in another exhibition match.

You wonder whether that is actually true of Ronaldo, whose ability to keep going remains extraordinary.

That appeared to be the winning goal for Portugal, but Mexico weren't done. He pulls it back for Hernandez, and he skies it miles over the bar.

El Tri, winners of the tournament in 1999, were roused from their stupor and responded, with Hernandez aka Chicharito diving to head home Vela's cross three minutes from half-time, after Portugal had made a mess of a routine clearance. Piling bodies forward in the hunt for a goal, Gelson Martins fired the ball into the area, with a ricochet taking it into the path of Cedric who fired a deflected effort into the back of the net.
