Portugal and Mexico draw 2-2 in Confederations Cup

19 Junio 2017, 06:17 | Crisanna Felipe

Both teams are trailing hosts Russian Federation in Group A, who beat New Zealand 2-0 in the tournament opener on Saturday. Both are tucked in a favorable Group A, with No. 95 New Zealand and the host country, No. 63 Russian Federation.

Defender Carlos Salcedo handed a clue about how El Tri will approach dealing with Ronaldo and Portugal's attack. It will come as little surprise that Cristiano Ronaldo and Javier Hernandez were at the heart of it, although it will raise a few eyebrows that only one of them scored in the 2-2 draw. "We nearly had the game won but we suffered in the final minutes".

"We are calm and we have to think about the next game".

After the match, the Colombian was pleased with the performance, stating that perhaps they even deserved to win. Host Russia tops the group with three points after defeating New Zealand 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup on Saturday.

Video replays were again consulted, but no change was made to the initial decision to award the goal.

This baffled Brian Kerr, who was not happy with the amount of time the assistant ref had allowed to be played before informing the referee of the offside, and Didi Hamann too was not impressed as he described the incident as a farce. "We were always more unsafe than them, both in our organised play and on the counter attack". With a team well balanced by coach Fernando Santos, Portugal outscored opponents 28-4 during that streak, with five clean sheets.

"We know we didn't play well", he said. Portugal are ranking No. 8 in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings, while Mexico fell one spot in the most recent rankings to No. 17.

The same two players combined not long afterwards as Ronaldo played a delightful backheel to his teammate but the Besiktas attacker shot wide. "In the end the result was fair as Mexico also played well".

Prosecutors lodged a complaint at a Spanish court this month in which Ronaldo is accused of defrauding the Spanish treasury of €14.7million in tax owed on image rights.

As man of the match, Ronaldo was obliged to attend a formal press conference but failed to appear amid suggestions he was "undergoing treatment". The team said that he couldn't go because he was receiving post-game treatment, although it said it wasn't anything serious.

Portugal eventually broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Ronaldo did well to pick out an un-marked Ricardo Quaresma, who skipped past Ochoa and slotted into an empty net.

Chicharito equalised for the Mexicans with three minutes left in the first half with a diving header.

For Mexico's coach Juan Carlos Osorio, he too does not have a lot of injuries to deal with but his captain and Mexico's most experienced player Rafael Marquez could miss the first match because of a back spasm.

The second half became more defensive as both sides wanted to protect what they had, and Ochoa produced a huge save from substitute Andre Silva, whose header was heading for the bottom corner, only to be brilliantly scooped away one-handed by the Malaga stopper. Santos has been attempting to phase in a new generation of players but it was a slight surprise to see newly signed AC Milan striker Andre Silva, who has made such a successful start to his worldwide career, limited to a cameo off the bench, during which time he forced Guillermo Ochoa into a fine save.
