Pakistan make history, win Champions Trophy

19 Junio 2017, 10:35 | Gerardo Tarin

Dhoni scored four runs before he was dismissed by Hasan Ali.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed was understandably jubilant as he reflected on his side's remarkable thrashing of India in the ICC Champions Trophy final.

Chasing the target of 339 India were all out in 31st over. "We played very well and know we have won the final", Ahmed said.

Arthur admitted Pakistan were desperate to prove they could go toe to toe with tournament favourites India with the title up for grabs.

Fakhar Zaman found the ideal time to post a maiden ODI hundred and lay the platform for Pakistan's imposing 4-338 against India in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval.

Successive Indian governments have refused to play bilateral cricket with Pakistan and it is unlikely that the result of the 2017 Champions Trophy will change the views of the Narendra Modi government.

Together, they made India pay for the let-off and misses.

Put into bat, the Men in Green had a ideal start as both Azhar Ali and Zaman shared a 128-run opening stand to put their team on road of a massive first innings-score. A bolt so ridiculously good that this Pakistan performance reminded everyone of their glory days, when Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar and Inzaman-ul-Haq ran the show. Having lost the three cheaply, the Indians quickly slipped to 54-5 and even though the big-hitting Hardik Pandya tried to lift them with a 43-ball 76, it was only a matter of time before the innings caved in.

India won the toss and chose to field first in the Champions Trophy final at The Oval.

The Pakistan bowling corps engineered a spectacular collapse of India's top order, sending Rohit Sharma, Kohli and tournament high-scorer Shikhar Dhawan back to the dressing room within the first 15 overs. Fakhar was out to a nice catch on the run by Jadeja behind square.

But after four wins - finishing with a 180-run thumping over their biggest rivals - the underdogs were celebrating winning their first global 50-over title since the 1992 World Cup. And if this wasn't too much already, some fans cried uncontrollably on the camera and chanted foul slogans against Indian cricketers, specially Virat Kohli. "But the more consistent you get in learning from games like this, it's better for the team in the future".

Jadeja was out in the next over, as India's last four wickets went for six runs, medium-pacer Hasan Ali taking two of them to extend his tournament-leading tally to 13.
