Pakistan crush India by 180 runs to lift Champions Trophy

19 Junio 2017, 06:50 | Crisanna Felipe

"India is in a great place and must be favoured to retain the ICC Champions Trophy but no-one should discount Pakistan".

His opening five overs - the first nine in their reply - left India 33-3.

Pakistan thrashed arch-rivals India by 180 runs to win the worldwide cricket tournament at The Oval in London, U.K. on Sunday.

Successive Indian governments have refused to play bilateral cricket with Pakistan and it is unlikely that the result of the 2017 Champions Trophy will change the views of the Narendra Modi government.

Pakistan bowler Hasan Ali took three wickets, including the final wicket of Jasprit Bumrah caught by Pakistan Captain Sarfraz Ahmed, and went on to win the tournament's Golden Ball award at the top bowler throughout the competition.

Former skippers Misbah ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi also heaped praise on the Pakistan team. This is their worst streak of defeats in final against Pakistan.

Virat Kohli won the toss and put Pakistan in to bat first.

Pakistan, who had lost all three of their previous matches against India in the knockout stages of International Cricket Council tournaments and started this event the lowest ranked of the eight teams involved, were now on the brink of a sensational win. India are the only other side to have done the quintuple.

The Indian captain had come into the match with an astonishing batting average of 253 runs in this year's tournament, having been dismissed only once in four matches. After developing a crucial century against England in the semi-finals, the duo efficiently reached the milestone again as they contributed 128 before Azhar was run out on 59.

So after coming into the tournament as rank underdogs - they entered just edging past West Indies as the lowest seed - Pakistan end up as the victor of the Champions Trophy 2017.

A revelation with two successive 50s and then a century in the final, in only his fourth one-day global - less than two weeks after his debut, at the age of 27. Here's how tweeple are showing their support for the Men in Blue: Many have even posted messages for Hardik Pandya who hit the fastest-ever half-century in any ICC tournament final. "We thought that if we could get among the Indian top order early, we could probably expose the middle order that hadn't batted a fair amount".

But veteran all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez s quickfire 57 not out, including three sixes, then took Pakistan well beyond 300.

Out of 8 finals the chasing sides have won 5 times (2002 was washed out).

But so did Pakistan, who restricted their last three opponents to below 240.

So when he was dropped by Azhar Ali in the slips off Mohammad Amir in the third over, huge cheers erupted around the arena.
