NHL notebook: Vegas begins roster-building process

Vegas Golden Knights general manager George McPhee had difficulty containing his excitement in anticipation of the NHL's expansion draft list being released.
"I was fortunate ... but there was that moment when you wonder who is going to be protected or unprotected", the Calgary Flames assistant general manager said recently. That forced the team to also expose top-pairing blueliner Marc Methot.
The Kings have many fine players worth placing on their protected list, including defenseman Drew Doughty, center Anze Kopitar and goaltender Jonathan Quick.
Mike Smith went from Arizona to Calgary and a couple of defensemen traded places as National Hockey League teams made last-minute moves before the Vegas expansion draft roster freeze. He had better hope a side deal is worked out to allow the Golden Knights to select one of their worse players, otherwise his seat is going to be boiling.
Kevan Miller: In what was really a year-long tryout between Adam McQuaid, Kevan Miller, and Colin Miller, I really think it was a strong postseason showing from Kevan Miller that's earned him the right as the club's third and final protected defenseman.
"We are excited to welcome the Vegas Golden Knights to the National Hockey League and the Pacific Division". He has already declared giving the no-movement clause in his contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, which clearly makes him up for grabs. Neal scored a total of 23 goals this season.
The Minnesota Wild exposed forward Eric Staal and defensemen Marco Scandella and Matt Dumba.
Buffalo: Slim pickings for the Golden Knights off of the Sabres' roster, but Zach Bogosian's exposure is a sure sign that his time is nearly up in Buffalo. Defenseman Andrew MacDonald and goalie Michal Neuvirth are also available. Among the notable players left unprotected were Nate Schmidt, Philipp Grubauer, Jay Beagle, Brett Connolly, Tyler Graovac, Brooks Orpik and Taylor Chorney and all five unrestricted free agents, an impressive group that features T.J. Oshie, Kevin Shattenkirk, Justin Williams, Karl Alzner and Daniel Winnik. But that doesn't necessarily mean McPhee and his staff be drawn towards such prominent players, especially since the Knights GM has said his team will be built through the draft. Both Souray and Tom Gilbert got beat to the puck, then Joe Pavelski beat Souray around the net, then various San Jose players beat various Oilers in front of the net before the puck was banged in. But it's unlikely the two would consider joining an expansion team at this point in their respective careers.
It could get interesting if McPhee say Vatanen as a trade chip and Murray was able to promote the fact that Vatanen had value outside of simply being an on-ice player for Vegas next season.
From the resulting lists of unprotected players, the Golden Knights are permitted to claim one player from each team.
It will definitely be interesting to see how much teams give up so Vegas lays off certain players.
Some players left unprotected, such as OttawaforwardBobby Ryan, carry hefty contracts, which Vegas might shy away from so not to restrict the team's payroll structure under the salary cap.
Thornton had a cap hit of $6.8 million and Marleau $6.7 million in the last of three-year deals.
Even though the protection lists are public, the process isn't as straightforward as Vegas taking the best asset available from each team.
The NHL Expansion Draft will be held Wednesday, June 21. He's also your expected replacement for Dominic Moore should he leave via free agency come July.

He did birdie the 16th, but it was not enough, as he finished in second with a score of 12-under-par, tied with Hideki Matsuyama . He closed with a 5-under 67, only realizing after his par on the final hole that a birdie would have set yet another U.S.

Trump got rid of Comey, in May to hamper an inquiry into his sacked national security adviser, Michael Flynn. If Trump would seriously consider firing Sessions, it stands to reason that he would dispose of Comey.
