Koepka in control and with a 1-shot lead at US Open

19 Junio 2017, 06:51 | Gerardo Tarin

Xander Schauffele, a rookie on the PGA Tour playing in his first U.S. Open, birdied his last hole for a 69 to tie for fifth at 10-under 268 along with Bill Haas (69) and Rickie Fowler (72), who was poised at yet another major to win only to fall back.

Koepka's fine showing saw him equal Rory McIlroy's 2011 record for the lowest total to par in the tournament's history, as he ended the week 16 under.

It just wasn't enough to faze Koepka. I suppose I did most things well all week and could be standing here in a different scenario, a different position, if I just had of got a few breaks and maybe holed some putts along the way.

"I felt confident all week".

"It made me feel a lot better seeing Brooks shoot 5 under", Thomas said.

Kite shot even-par 72 in gusty winds in 1992 at Pebble Beach, winning by two strokes over Jeff Sluman. But I would like to think that's not why I played how I did today.

"It's so nice to be playing on my anniversary that we're moving our anniversary officially this year to Tuesday", Cink said.

FORGIVING CONDITIONS The soft, forgiving conditions created opportunity for major movement up the leaderboard for those players willing to take it. After kicking off in 65-73-68, the California native began in solo 5th, two shy of 54-hole leader Brian Harman. Hopefully though, in future majors I can play in the last or next to last group to give myself a better chance.

Koepka also became the third American to win the U.S. Open after Dustin Johnson's victory at Oakmont a year ago and Jordan Spieth's win at Chambers Bay in 2015.

After three days of low scoring, the field faced a stiffer challenge on Sunday as gusts made birdies much harder to come by.

Koepka and Harman were tied through 11 holes until the left-hander suffered consecutive bogeys. It was just his fourth professional title and second in America, but it yielded the biggest first prize in golf history, $2.16 million. He two-putted for birdie, and he rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th.

Only six players had ever reached double digits under par in the previous 116 times at the U.S. Open.

He was at 14-under par at the turn.

But the American then paid the price for an over-aggressive birdie attempt on the 10th which sailed past the hole leaving an awkward putt to save par. I mean, it was still, I mean, 12-under, 11-under was still leading the tournament at one back.

The resulting birdie reduced his deficit to playing partner Koepka to four shots, Koepka having followed birdies on the first and second with another from 35 feet on the eighth.

Harman was on top at 12 under coming into the day.

Matsuyama has two holes left, compared to six for Koepka and seven for Harman.

Koepka then turned the screw with a nerveless trio of birdies to seize the crown.

Following are highlights from the second major championship of the year at Erin Hills.
