Justin Thomas carded the lowest sub-par round ever at a U.S. Open but still surrendered the third-round lead to fellow American Brian Harman on a helter-skelter Saturday at Erin Hills.
However, Thomas bettered those performances with a remarkable 63 that saw him become the first player to complete a U.S. Open round in nine under par. No one who is not named Patrick Reed will remember that Reed, sitting tied for 7th place at 8-under, was a narrow bogey on five away from tying the previous U.S. Open low round of 8-under, set by Johnny Miller in 1973, and broken by Thomas.
Harman is now in pole position to become the first left-handed U.S. Open champion and only the fourth man to win the event having previously picked up the U.S. Junior Amateur title. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said. After reaching 10 under through seven holes, he muffed two wedges and made triple bogey on his next hole.
He finished at 12-under 272, the first player to complete a U.S. Open double digits under par. "I got off to a poor start", said Summerhays.
After three days of benign conditions which have led to a feast of low-scoring, Mother Nature struck back with a vengeance on Sunday, lashing the challenging course with strong gusts.
In the final round at Oakmont past year, his golf ball moved slightly as he positioned himself for a short putt on the fifth hole.
An eagle on the final hole was a crowning glory for the young player who has emerged as a burgeoning talent.
Tied at 11-under with Thomas are Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood, who both shot rounds of four-under par (68). He added: I felt really good, played really well.
An accurate three-wood off the 18th tee was followed by a dazzling approach from 299 yards with the same club, before the world number 13 rolled in an eight-foot eagle putt to make history. A lot of them had to come from far back going into the weekend, and it was hard to put together two good rounds.
The Florida native has more good finishes in the majors than any of the other four.
"I could not have hit that three-wood to the last (from 299 yards) any better if I tried, just a little high cut and I was very fortunate for the overnight rain for the ball to stay there".
Before the start of the final round, there was a bunched leaderboard with the top six players all striving to win their maiden major.
Si Woo Kim (-9): Kim has been just grinding out great scores while the attention has been on everyone else.
"I think the biggest thing is not getting ahead of yourself". Koepka finally took the lead with a 35-foot birdie putt on No. 8. A mere hiccup. On Saturday, he got to 14 under, then on Sunday, he widened the gap versus par to 16 under.
The 30-year old Harman fired six birdies and just one bogey, only his second dropped shot of the week in an impressive round.
