NBC Will Air Megyn Kelly's Controversial Interview with Alex Jones
It was an interesting move on the part of NBC and Kelly's show - in a way allowing them to analyze Jones without actually letting him go nuts on air.
Ahead of its airing, Jones urged the network to release the raw recording of his interview with Kelly, threatening that if they did not share at least 100 minutes of their conversations, he would release more than eight hours of secretly recorded audio and footage of Kelly and her team. Kelly's show likely boosted its national profile and ratings, and the bad press it generated will likely be offset by the generally positive reviews for the segment itself.
Kelly'sinterview with Jones - which was edited by NBC last week as a result of the backlash - included an added interview with one of the parents who lost a child that December day in 2012. We will continue our local coverage, including a special report on our Sunday 11pm newscast, which includes Sandy Hook parents, Governor Malloy and others who work to affect change around violence and mental illness.
Kelly has reached out to victim's family members and at least one has agreed to be interviewed, the Courantreported.
"NBC was scrambling to find a way out of this mess without having to back down and cancel Sunday's episode of Megyn's show".
"Tonight we confront him on his notorious lies about the Sandy Hook Massacre, and we examine just where does he get his information", Kelly said, noting that the "incendiary radio host" has spouted messages that have "caused enormous pain".
In the lead-up to the interview, NBC and Kelly took heavy flak from liberal critics-and parents of the Sandy Hook victims-for giving Jones a mainstream platform from which to air his abhorrent views.
There are legitimate reasons to wonder whether Kelly has successfully walked this line with Jones, not the least of which is that Jones is just the type of interview subject you can count on to know what to do when a microphone is around. His influence, she intones, can not be ignored. He's been elevated by 5 or 6 million viewers or listeners, and by the president of the United States. Asked how many times Trump has called Jones, he replied: "I don't want to get into all that". He denied that, but conceded they had a "friendly" relationship. Kelly is attempting to make an impression with NBC's audience this summer in advance of the September debut of her 9 a.m. morning show.
Jones has said he believes her report will be a "fraud". Heslin upbraids Jones for his cruelly capricious remarks, emphasizing the brutal fact of holding his son "with a bullet hole through his head".
'I think he's blessed to have his children to spend the day with, to speak to. As evidenced by the segment that immediately followed Jones' - a pearl-clutching take on the phenomenon of (legal) delivery services for (legal) marijuana - Kelly's primary mode is manufacturing and expressing concern, without much thought as to where that concern comes from and why it matters. Megyn Kelly, formerly a news anchor on Fox, is set to air an interview with the controversial figure on June 18th on NBC, officially bringing him from the fringe of politics to center-stage. At this post's time of publication, Jones had not concluded his commentary. But at other points, he declared victory, popping a bottle of champagne while simultaneously arguing the broadcast was a letdown.
