Advisory: Replacing saturated fat with healthier fat could lower cardiovascular risks
"The main sources of saturated fat to be decreased are dairy fat (butter), lard (pork), palm oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil", noted AHA. In a new report, the association found that it actually increased bad cholesterol in 7 out of 10 trials.
The trail couldn't establish a difference between using coconut oil and other commonly used oils such as butter and palm oil.
"We recommend replacing the saturated fats in the diet with unsaturated fats, like using oils instead of butter and choosing foods like avocado, oily fish, nuts and seeds instead of foods high in saturated fats like cakes, cookies, chocolate and fatty meat".
The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued a newadvisory on saturated fat and declared that cutting the "bad" fat from our diet is as effective as taking statins.
It contains plenty of saturated fats, which are bad for the heart.
Paleo arguments in favour of diets high in saturated fat have been thrown into doubt yet again with more convincing evidence suggesting consumption should be minimal for good health.
Replacing saturated fat with mostly refined carbohydrate and sugars is not linked to reduced risk of heart disease, according to the advisory published June 15 in the journal Circulation.
Healthy fats include polyunsaturated fat and monounsaturated fat. What's more, the authors also note that the supposed health benefits that can be garnered from consuming coconut oil are likely not supported by scientists, but by manufacturers who profit from the product. Sacks said he did not know "why people think coconut oil is healthy". You can continue to cook with coconut oil but in small doses. Saturated fat consumption has always been tied to the rising incident of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). But the indirect link between "bad" cholesterol and cardiovascular disease is still there, so the review basically advises you to avoid eating coconut oil. The association also said that the "bad" cholesterol is likely to get deposited arterial walls and cause blockages, resulting in strokes and heart attacks. The AHA said that those scientific studies that replaced saturated fats with unsaturated fats found a slight lowered cardiovascular disease risk.
Nutritionist Dorit Jaffe agreed with Warren and told Yahoo Beauty: "Of course eating too much of anything, even something that is healthy, isn't a good thing".
For the past few years, there's been a craze over coconut oil, with many dubbing it the ultimate multi-tasker and natural beauty staple. The BBC reported that the body needs fat to "absorb vitamins".
