GOP senator warns against rushed vote on health care bill

19 Junio 2017, 01:38 | Crisanna Felipe

Disputes about how to handle abortion coverage nearly sank former President Barack Obama's health care law, and now it looks as though the thorny issue may complicate GOP efforts to unravel the 2010 Affordable Care Act, or "Obamacare".

In addition, it has begun airing television ads aimed at influencing Sens.

The Senate's version of the American Health Care Act isn't even fully written, as senators continue to resolve disagreements over cuts to Medicaid, calls to defund Planned Parenthood and when to cut taxes outlined in the Affordable Care Act.

Senate Democrats are asking for a meeting with Republicans to find out what's in their healthcare bill. At a Rose Garden ceremony minutes after the bill's 217-213 House passage on May 4, Trump called it "a great plan".

Montana Democratic Governor Steve Bullock, among the letter's signers, questioned Trump's position in light of his conflicting statements.

Trump celebrated the House passing its version. John Thune, a member of leadership, said he hoped "there's still some magic in the 4th", but admitted "I don't know".

"Is it the framework of the House-passed bill and then we're filling in our own details?" President Donald Trump promised to eliminate the law on his first day in office, but Republicans, who control the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate, have struggled to coalesce around a single plan.

A GOP aide familiar with the discussions said Senate staffers have known for months about the potential problem, and they've been trying to design workarounds that would essentially achieve the same results as the House bill. It is not clear whether McConnell, or more conservative party members such as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and Senator Mike Lee of Utah, are receptive to keeping some of the taxes.

The strategy could include obstructing routine tasks, demands for an open process for the ultra-secretive bill and parliamentary maneuvers to "prevent committees from meeting for longer than two hours", according to CNN.

Sanders took to the Senate floor, addressing the fact that Hodgkinson was a former volunteer for Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, saying he was "sickened" by the attack.

The seven all opted to accept terms of the 2010 law that allowed their states to receive additional federal money to expand the number of people covered by Medicaid.

The Republican-controlled Senate on Thursday night voted 30-2 for legislation that would raise the sales tax to 6.5 percent, cut income tax rates initially 5 percent and establish tiered coal production tax rates.

Several of the senators being targeted have expressed some concern about the evolving Senate legislation or its process. Graham said, "I just think the House had to pick up the Freedom Caucus votes and they want to control the escalating cost of Medicaid. And 85,000 Pennsylvanians could lose their jobs over the next decade in the health care industry". It suggests no specific policy proposals.
