SenateDemocrats are asking for a meeting with Republicans to find out what's in their healthcare bill.
Andy Slavitt, a former Obama administration official who headed up the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said in a series of tweets Thursday that there are reports that McConnell will release the text of the bill and the CBO score simultaneously, within a few hours of a Senate floor vote.
While we are all watching the hearings on Trump's possible obstruction of the intelligence communities, Republicans are quietly pushing a health bill along through the Senate.
That plan, which passed the House on a 67-22 vote Friday, includes no tax increases, per se, but "broadens the base" by eliminating some sales tax exemptions in existing law, the largest being for telecommunications services, such as cellphone plans.
Rep. Mike Enzi, the Senate's Budget Committee Chairman whose committee is taking the lead in writing the health care bill, said "I am pleased with the progress". "That will positively effect the coverage and care of millions of Americans, including many who are dealing with mental illness, chronic health problems, and drug addiction, " the letter states.
Premiums are rising in the ACA's individual markets, but reducing access to insurance through cuts to Medicaid isn't the answer, she said.
While Schumer's letter does not say Democrats are now open to repealing Obamacare, Popp argued that the letter's premise of wanting to meet suggests that Democrats have dropped the precondition. In the Senate, Republicans created a "working group" in which 13 conservative men, nearly exclusively from red states, decided they'd craft the Senate legislation. Another said Trump used a vulgar phrase to describe the House bill and told the senators, "We need to be more generous". So this version goes back to the Senate. In fact, if you ask them, they'll say that they're still working hard to hash out a compromise that delivers on their promise. "Senator Grassley will study the final Senate bill when it's ready". This is a key demand for a large portion of the Republican base.
The Senate voted 19-8 to adopt the budget. In the past, abortion language in budget bills has been ruled out of order. "It allows the Senate to correct the error of its ways".
Two of the three insurers that sold policies statewide in 2017 said in April they were dropping out next year, while a third expressed doubts about re-entering.
The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, is credited with extending insurance to 20 million people by expanding the Medicaid program and giving people subsidies to help them afford coverage. That language, as well as an amendment seeking to ensure more funding to help people with preexisting conditions, was instrumental in gaining enough votes for the bill to pass the House. He also said the revisions would change prior agreements on Medicaid reform.
"I believe you're going to see a grassroots juggernaut from one side of the country to another that the next two weeks are pivotal", he told reporters.
