French Open 2017: Teenager shocks Wozniacki

19 Junio 2017, 06:35 | Gerardo Tarin

Wozniacki has had a tougher run through the French Open, and doesn't appear to be quite at full fitness. She responded by going up by an early break in the second set as the wind eased and was 5-2 ahead when play was halted for rain for more than three hours.

Catherine Bellis (USA) reacts during her match against Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)(not pictured) on day seven of the 2017 French Open tennis tournament at Stade Roland Garros. Ostapenko's victory occupied 1hr 53min, and Bacsinszky's 1hr 49min, which brought both matches in under the minimum-play requirement of two hours.

"It's a nice story, pretty cool", said Bacsinszky who was already aware of the quirk in the calendar.

"It was really hard because we had all the seasons rolled into one today", she said. However, Wozniacki has played solid in her own right and has to feel this is a terrific chance to win her first grand slam even though clay isn't her favorite surface. The other men's quarterfinals, at the end of the day, are 2016 runner-up Andy Murray vs.

She is the youngest French Open semifinalist in a decade.

But she handed the advantage straight back in the fifth game and the Swiss player went on to claim the opening set on an ace after 63 minutes on court. Ostapenko's power game has been on fire and after battling back from a set down in the fourth round, she is going to have all the momentum rolling. This time the evening pause was much shorter.

"And the medical timeout I took against Mladenovic on the second day, it showed on the videos". I still had some opportunities here and there but didn't make it.

The Swiss player of Hungarian heritage temporarily gave up the game due to a foot injury five years ago, and started work as a waitress to prepare herself for a career in hotel management.

First set Bacsinszky took through the break in the ninth game and in the second game bounced back from the account 1:3 and finished off Mladenovic in the tenth game. "My game plan was working and kind of kept her on her toes with putting in some drop shots and mixing up the pace".

If the weather gods tried to assist Mladenovic in one way, in another way they did not.

But Mladenovic said there was nothing wrong with the atmosphere.

While Wozniacki was among the strongest remaining women's singles players, she could not stop the young Latvian tennis player.

Ultimately it wasn't meant to be and the 26-year-old's wait for a maiden grand slam title continues. "That's not my mindset", said Mladenovic, who is through to the last eight at a major for just the second time. "It didn't happen for me". I don't prepare my matches out of revenge.

Yesterday's scheduled men's quarter-finals involving Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were postponed until this morning.
