Rod Rosenstein probably never expected to be in the spotlight so often while serving in President Donald Trump's administration. Grassley's office said the letter is in response to a recent letter from Feinstein requesting that the committee seek details from senior Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership about Comey's interactions with President Donald Trump before he was sacked. He lashed out at a top Justice Department official overseeing the inquiry, reflecting his mounting frustration with the unrelenting controversy that has consumed his early presidency.
Health and Human Services Secretary Ben Carson said Friday that he believes special counsel Robert Mueller should be given a chance to do his job, but added that "there's nothing to find" in relation to the Donald Trump's campaign and Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.
Thus, the responsibility of supervising the Russian Federation investigation fell to the highly respected Rod Rosenstein, who had been serving as acting attorney general prior to Sessions' Senate confirmation.
Trump criticized an unnamed "man who told me to fire ..."
Regardless of what the heck Rosenstein was really talking about, this is - as the NY Times Maggie Haberman noted - a statement unlike any other.
The new tweets are the latest in a week of angry social media responses from the president over a report by the Washington Post that Mr Mueller was looking into whether Mr Trump obstructed justice. If he fires Sessions, Rosenstein would become acting attorney general until the Senate confirms a permanent replacement.
"I appointed him; I stand by that decision, " he said. They are: Flynn; Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager; Rick Gates, Manafort's business partner; Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser; and Roger J. Stone Jr., an informal adviser to Mr. Trump.
Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump fired him because of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Russian Federation probe.
Trump had previously boasted that he was not personally under investigation, and Comey said the president had repeatedly pressured him to publicly clear him.
A Justice Department official - who declined to speak on the record - told CNN that the White House didn't order Rosenstein's statement. The source spoke on condition of anonymity. He said the president "sought my advice and input" on Comey's firing.
Trump was alluding to the former secretary of state's handling of her private email server, an issue that dogged the Democratic nominee's presidential campaign since before it officially began.
Rosenstein brought up the possibility of recusing himself during a meeting with the Justice Department's third-in-command - behind Sessions and Rosenstein - Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, ABC Newsreported. Trump fired Comey on May 9. "Nice", Trump wrote in his first tweet.
Trump is under increasing pressure on the Russian Federation probe. The letter to campaign officials was signed by Michael Glassner, the Trump campaign's executive director, and sent in an envelope from the Jones Day law firm, which the campaign retained to field inquiries from investigators, according to a copy of the letter obtained by CNN.
The White House has directed questions for details to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.
