Cosby judge declares mistrial as jury deadlocks again

Cosby jury deliberations, now longer than trial, stretch into Saturday

Bill Cosby arrives with his wife Camille for the sixth day of his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Jurors also asked for, and received, a definition of reasonable doubt, the threshold that prosecutors must cross to win a conviction, and reviewed testimony from Constand and her mother about phone conversations they had with Cosby after the encounter.

She filed a police complaint in January 2005 after moving back home to the Toronto area and then sued Cosby in March of that year when the local prosecutor decided not to charge him.

Two women jurors who appeared to be in their 30s or 40s looked anguished when they announced the final deadlock, wiping away tears with tissues handed to them by a sympathetic young man sitting between them.

By lunch, D.A. Kevin R. Steele had vowed that his office would retry Cosby. It's not unusual for them to have questions about evidence so they can use it to bolster their opinions, like the phone call between Constand's mother and the comedian, which seemed to be a major focus during deliberations in the past few days. It says the trial has "given a voice to the many victims who felt powerless and silenced".

Sixty women, including Constand, have accused Cosby of drugging and/or sexually assaulting them, or attempting to do so.

She said that Cosby brought her three blue pills, saying they would help her relax and assuring her they were safe. Prosecutors have suggested he gave her something stronger, possibly quaaludes.

'How do I describe the district attorney? The 2004 encounter at Cosby's suburban Philadelphia estate was the only one to result in criminal charges. Cosby's wife, Camille - who skipped all but the defence closing argument - issued a blistering statement Saturday.

When the trial started June 5, the jury of seven men and five women were bussed in from Allegheny County near Pittsburgh and have since been sequestered in a hotel.

His team declared victory this weekend, if only temporarily.

They 73-year-old, who's been married to Cosby since 1964, added that "historically, people have challenged injustices". To her, the mistrial underscored how hard it is for rape victims to get justice in the court system; she was disappointed that the defense lawyers made their case by attacking Constand's credibility. "Overtly arrogant in collaborating with the district attorney", said the statement.

Several accusers were in court all week awaiting a verdict and wearing buttons that read "We Stand in Truth".

Shortly after a Montgomery County judge declared a mistrial Saturday in the grueling and emotional sexual assault trial of the comedian once known as "America's Dad", the attorney for Bill Cosby's main accuser said her client gave a voice to sexual assault victims.

The judge, meanwhile, assured the panel members - whose identities remain sealed by court order - that he appreciated their efforts throughout the two-week trial.

The charges against Cosby, three felony counts, carried a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. His lawyers had argued the sex was consensual.

The mistrial leaves in limbo a large slice of American popular culture from Cosby's six-decade career as a comedian and actor.

Constand knew Cosby through her job at Temple University in Philadelphia, and he invited her to his Cheltenham home.

Dozens of women have come forward to say he had drugged and assaulted them.

"Social attitudes in general affect what happens in criminal trials, in rape cases". The jury is set to return for a fifth day of deliberations on Friday at 9 a.m.
