Thursday night's annual Congressional Ball Game drew record crowds and, despite an 11-2 rout by Democrats over Republicans, the GOP team took home the trophy as lawmakers dedicated the game to Scalise.

"This bipartisan event shows baseball's power to bring people together", the Nationals said in a statement. "The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", it stated.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs. And the USA government will police other trips to ensure travelers are pursuing a "full-time schedule of educational exchange activities".

The gunman, identified by authorities as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police officers during the attack.

There is bipartisan agreement that procedures need to be adjusted to keep members safe in potentially unsafe situations, but there's no consensus yet on whether more taxpayer money should be spent to protect members of Congress.

"I visited Steve, his wife, and his family in the hospital as he continues to fight for his recovery". Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalized.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., recounted candidate Trump's comments prodding supporters to pummel demonstrators at rallies and said Republicans were being "sanctimonious".

"Whether you're conservative, liberal, Democrat or Republican, we have certain beliefs and we strive to get our opinions across", Pallone said.

Medics say a bullet traveled across Scalise's pelvis, breaking bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding.

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was at Wednesday's practice and gave medical help after the shooting, said it would have "been awful" if the game had been canceled, and said Scalise would want it to go on.

Unity after the shooting was the primary theme of the evening, as the AP noted a mention of Scalise from the announcer led to a standing ovation from those thousands of fans.

Matt Golin, who lives about a half mile from where the shooting happened in Alexandria, made a decision to come to his first congressional baseball game after hearing about the tragedy.

"I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it", she said with difficulty, through tears.

GOP Representative Steven Scalise was one of the people shot.

While the officers did not use rifles in responding to the shooting Wednesday, it is common for them to carry rifles while patrolling the Capitol grounds.

The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm calibre rifle - had been legally purchased.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

Hodgkinson's Facebook page is largely political. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign. Last year, he volunteered for Sen.

"That was tough for me", Duncan said. "Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values". The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Congressional aide Zach Barth was the fourth person hit and is also expected to make a full recovery, NPR's Vanessa Romo reports.
