Champions Trophy 2017: Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed thrilled with emphatic turnaround

19 Junio 2017, 09:10 | Gerardo Tarin

India captain Virat Kohli said the pressure created by Pakistan's bowlers proved too much for his title-holders to handle in a stunning 180-run Champions Trophy final defeat at The Oval.

The Pakistan victory was a given once India let them post 338 for four in their quota of 50 overs.

He broke the back of the Indian batting line-up before Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan wrecked the middle-order.

Sarfraz Ahmed had previously captained Pakistan to Under-19 World Cup 2006 triumph.

Hasan Ali picked up the award for man of the tournament with his 13 wickets, including three in India's collapse, and the victory was cathartic for Amir in particular after he spent five years banned from the sport for his role in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal at Lord's.

Widely written off after an abject display in their opening group match against the same opponents, the lowest-ranked team going into the tournament suddenly rediscovered their mojo.

"Despite losing early wickets we were looking for a big partnership to set up the game nicely".

Once last hope Hardik Pandya (76) was run out, the writing was on the wall as India were bundled out for just 158 with nearly 20 overs remaining.

Amir took out all three of India's premier batsmen, bowled a maiden for figures of 6-2-16-3, then watched as his teammates mopped up.

The left-arm pacer extracted movement both in the air and off the pitch and quite a few of his deliveries were nearly unplayable. "Even with the ball, they were very aggressive", he added.

In Amir's second over, Kohli was dropped at slip. Pandya (76 off 43 balls) was dealing in boundaries at that point, having already hammered six sixes and four fours. This helped Amir get the outside edge of Kohli - twice.

Pandya came to the crease with India teetering on 54 for five after Yuvraj Singh and former captain Dhoni departed in quick succession.

Pakistan won the match by 180 runs.

Pakistan had begun their ICC Champions Trophy campaign with a huge 124-run loss to India.

The openers, who also managed a 100-run stand for the first wicket in the previous matches, was separated due to a suicidal run-out of Ali when Zaman was ball-watching and Ali departed with the score on 128 for one after 23 overs.

"We showed great character". They played with courage and belief.

India, on the other hand, who played to their potential throughout the tournament, were struggling against the disciplined Pakistani batting lineup and failed to utilise the conditions completely.

"Pakistan have made this CT17 truly memorable", he said.

Put in to bat, Pakistan got off to a flawless start.

He also appreciated Pakistani opener "Fakhar's raw talent in action".

Zaman couldn't resist the length ball outside off stump, so he poked at it and only nicked it.

45 Runs scored by Zaman off R Ashwin, the most runs scored by any batsman off Ashwin in an ODI. However, two simple questions still remain.

With the exception of Zimbabwe's tour two years ago, Pakistan have had to play all of their "home" matches outside their own country since a 2009 terror attack on Sri Lanka's team bus in Lahore.

He would have been run out for one if Kedar Jadhav s throw from cover had hit and he was caught behind off a Bumrah no-ball on three.

Pakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez's quickfire 57 not out, including three sixes, then took Pakistan well beyond 300.

The last few overs saw Hafeez thrashing Indian bowlers all around the park.
