Brooks Koepka wins US Open title

19 Junio 2017, 09:57 | Gervasio Siguenza

Brooks Koepka is in position to win his first major title.

Koepka became the seventh straight first-time victor of a major championship, and it was the first time since 1998-2000 that Americans won their national championship three straight years. Despite facing a jumbled leaderboard with a multitude of contenders making birdies all around him, Koepka stayed true to his game and executed when it mattered most. "On some of these par fives I don't even need to hit driver to get there and I putted brilliantly this week too". It was McIlroy who also shot 16-under-par in winning his U.S. Open title at Congressional Country Club outside Washington in 2011.

So Koepka played nine practice holes with Scheffler, which turned out to be enough to usher him to victory on Sunday.

"And I felt confident all week, so to feel as confident as I did on a Sunday of a major and coming down the stretch was pretty neat". "So I think that was the changing point of the round". It's not the longest hole and one that mitigated Koepka's distance advantage.

Brian Harman was obviously disappointed with his bogey to finish. "But can't complain the way I finished it off", Stricker said. "The guys who do a really good job of that today are going to have a chance to win". "But, at the same time, I don't feel like I lost a golf tournament, I think Brooks went out and won the tournament". After three all-American seasons at Florida State, the Florida-native made a decision to start his career in Europe instead of America. He won the next day to graduate to the European Tour. He also tied for 11th in the Masters, but his game dropped off a bit from there. As recently as a couple of years ago he didn't seem to thrilled about his career choice. "I think it's an awesome course", he said.

Fowler gave himself a break: "You kind of have to say, 'Hey, it's a major, I played well this week"'. Koepka won five total events in Europe, where he met his Scottish caddie, Ricky Elliot, and learned to handle windy links courses, similar to the setup at Erin Hills. "I mean, this wind is now light compared to the beginning of the day, but that's what you get for playing a poor first few rounds".

The heavy winds on Sunday gave players and fans a taste of the type of test Erin Hills can offer. Tommy Fleetwood, Patrick Reed, and Si Woo Kim only managed even-par or worse.

Jordan Spieth may not have finished in the top either, but he had one of the best rounds Sunday at -3. Having said that, the approach he hit on 15 was, I thought, his best of the day.

Hideki Matsuyama is second at 12 under.

Brooks Koepka walked up to the eighteenth tee on Sunday afternoon with a comfortable lead over his nearest challenger, Brian Harman. - Fowler confident - Rickie Fowler was two behind Harman on 10 under after a four-under-par 68 which kept him firmly in contention.

Whitten is Golf Digest's architecture editor, who along with Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry are credited with the Erin Hills Design.

While he faded on the back nine, he carded a level par round of 72 to finish fourth. "That's what we've been working on, but maybe a day like today is all it needed to just kind of calm down". "It was, like, two minutes", Koepka said.

"Anytime you've seen the golf courses, US Open golf venues work back towards even par, there are complaints".

"If you had told me I was going to shoot 12-under this year at the U.S. Open and not win, I would have taken that bet for sure, " Harman said.

"If it was like this [windy] all week, two-under would be leading", said Els following his final round 74 to finish at seven-over for the tournament. He ends his weekend at Erin Hills at 1 over.
