Brooks Koepka wins US Open title after record week

Brian Harman putts on the 18th hole during the third round of the U.S. Open golf tournament Saturday

Brooks Koepka is closing in on the U.S. Open title.

Harman, a University of Georgia graduate, went into Sunday leading and hoping to win his first major.

"It will be exciting", said Spieth, who has spent the annual Spring Break holiday with Thomas and Fowler for the last two years. Koepla claims his first major victory with the U.S. Open title.

The former Florida State University player, who had finished no worse than 18th in his three previous Open appearances, extended his lead to four with birdies on 14, 15 and 16.

Koepka didn't let Harman's mistakes go to waste.

Hideki Matsuyama came to grips with this ferocious battle immediately, embarking on a stirring chase.

He bogeyed the 12th and 13th holes.

The USGA has done a great job of taking the US Open all over the country for over a century. He also played in the U.S. Open a year ago at Oakmont and missed the cut.

Eddie Pepperell was the only one of the six other Britons to make the cut to finish the day better than he started it.

Starting the final round with a bunched leaderboard, Koepka and Harman emerged from the pack to trade blows throughout the front nine.

Given the list of illustrious names who could not survive past 36 holes here, special credit is due to Scottie Scheffler.

The 27-year-old American didn't realize, however, just how close he was to making history.

Scheffler plays for the University of Texas, and Champ plays for Texas A&M. He began the day a shot behind the leader, Brian Harman. A day after signing for a 63, Justin Thomas (75 for 280) floundered.

Left defenseless by rain soften greens and calm conditions the U.S. Open, long regarded as the toughest test, was made to look easy through the opening three rounds as golfers attacked the pins with bravado in smashing scoring records.

The tournament, held in Erin, Wisconsin, was the first major event hosted at the course since the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2011.

Koepka birdied both Nos.

Koepka then frittered a golden chance to regain the lead on the 11th, but was unable to convert a nervy nine-foot putt for birdie. Fowler's 10 under was only good for a fifth-place tie.

Speaking of an early-season slump this year, Koepka said, "I was grinding all day every day, in the gym every day".

Emotion? The most he displayed was a light fist pump, his hand clenched a little tighter with each birdie, and a double fist pump on the 18th when he tapped in for par. They bomb it. If they hit it crooked, they'll bomb it again. The man seeking to become Japan's first major champion posted a 66 for a 12-under-par total; his tilt at the top comes with the context of him starting this tournament in 74 shots. Not longer after the call, Mizuno sent Koepka a set that was built at standard length and a half-degree upright.
