Brooks Koepka wins US Open, Fowler finishes 6 shots behind

He ended the tournament at 16-under par, tying Rory McIlroy's record for a U.S. Open.

One of golf's biggest hitters, the 27-year-old also demonstrated a killer instinct along with a deft touch with the putter, rolling in a monster 41-foot birdie putt at the eighth.

You can drink boring out of U.S. Open trophies.

Koepka takes home $2.16 million, the largest single-day earnings in golf.

Graeme McDowell, in an interview with earlier in the week, called Koepka "the most underrated American player in the world". It's the first time that has happened since 1998-2000. He was in the lead or in second place the rest of the way.

It has been 20 years since Els won the U.S. Open at Congressional, when he held off Colin Montgomerie by a stroke.

How did Koepka win the title? "Hopefully, though, in the future, in majors, I can play in the either last or next to last group to give myself a better chance".

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama was battling his way into contention going four-under through 13 holes to sit four off the pace alongside Englishman Tommy Fleetwood.

Emotion? The most he displayed was a light fist pump, his hand clenched a little tighter with each birdie, and a double fist pump on the 18th when he tapped in for par.

"Being an amateur in the U.S. Open is very cool", Scheffler said.

Matsuyama has two holes left, compared to six for Koepka and seven for Harman.

The latest U.S. Open victor spoke only two years ago about how he preferred baseball. But he was also devastatingly accurate, missing only one green on Sunday and only 10 total over the entire weekend.

Koepka was also tied for fourth in the US Open in 2014 - albeit 10 shots behind runaway victor Martin Kaymer - and shot 71 at Erin Hills in the 2011 US Amateur, although he failed to reach the matchplay stages. The tournament pits the top amateurs from the US against Britain and Ireland.

One of the University of Texas junior's goals is to play in the Walker Cup on September 9-10 at Los Angeles Country Club.

After turning in the best round ever at a U.S. Open, Justin Thomas was having one of the worst of the final round. Usually it's the opposite, but here it starts to calm down as the day goes on. And the prime beneficiary was Thomas, who catapulted up the leaderboard with his record-breaking nine-under-par 63.

American Brooks Koepka powered his way to a first major title in record-equalling fashion as Tommy Fleetwood's fearless US Open bid ended in disappointment.

Koepka birdied his first two holes to get to 13 under. Thomas was in the final group with Brian Harman, the third-round leader, and they did not tee off until almost 3 p.m. local time.

That victory five years ago at Royal Latham was his last tour win. Harman missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens. Often, going into an Open, the course-the venue-is the biggest conversation piece. They bomb it. If they hit it crooked, they hit it again. "He was brilliant, the shots he hit down the stretch, you can't describe how hard some of them are", Fleetwood continued.

It was more of the same at Erin Hills. After his second shot found the bunker, Koepka made an impressive shot to set up a short birdie putt to provide him with a two-stroke lead. Two down, 14 to go. One of Erin Hills' three architects, Ron Whitten, Golf Channel's Frank Nobilo said. He shot a Sunday 66 and was in the clubhouse at 12-under par more than an hour before the leaders.

Not only was Erin Hills playable, it produced some record-low numbers.

Whoever emerged victorious would definitely have earned it given the conditions which were reminiscent of the final round of the 1992 US Open at Pebble Beach. It featured a silhouette of Palmer in mid-stride, tossing his visor in the air. He tees off later on Sunday. Rickie Fowler (72 for 278) never managed to click through the gears.

Curtis Strange, a victor of two U.S. Opens, on different courses in a different era, told the new victor, "You don't know it, but your life has changed overnight".

Third birdie of the day ✅.

The world's fifth-ranked player is well off the lead. He tees off later Sunday.

Despite winds gusting up to 25mph which forced tournament officials to change the pin position on the par-three 13th, Spieth showed what was still possible with a closing 69. "I hate to say it's surprising, but I thought it was really well done".

"I was hoping to back-door a top 25", he said.

Koepka, one of Dustin Johnson's South Florida workout partners, was a study in nonchalance-one modest fist pump-when he holed out on the final green. The traditional definition of a U.S. Open-tight and nerve-wracking-was nonexistent at Erin Hills.

The wind is gusting up to 25 miles per hour with the forecast calling for it to go as high as 30 miles per hour in the afternoon when the leaders tee off.

Before the start of the final round, there was a bunched leaderboard with the top six players all striving to win their maiden major.
