British election deal puts Irish peace at risk

19 Junio 2017, 03:40 | Dolorita Barahona

Negotiations are set to continue between the DUP and Conservatives in London, and in Belfast where the five main Stormont parties are trying to restore powersharing.

On Thursday, May visited the wreckage of an apartment building in west London, where at least 17 people were killed in a fire, and ordered a public inquiry. They could be called right-wing as they do not accept same-sex marriage, are climate change deniers and are very pro-Brexit.

Former Prime Minister John Major who was involved in talks with both sides of the Northern Irish conflict peace talks before handing over to Tony Blair has warned he has reservations about his party going into government with the DUP.

The devolved government of Northern Ireland is at a standstill at the moment and the threat of direct rule from Westminster via the DUP's new political allies won't do anything to help resolve soon-to-be-exacerbated political tensions in Northern Ireland.

In a letter to Mr Hammond, Mr McDonnell said: "I am writing to ask whether the Government has been asked for this measure by the DUP, has agreed to it or is considering it".

A formal deal has yet to be secured but Tory sources have said there is a "broad agreement" on the principles of the speech, and State Opening will now take place on Wednesday - two days later than originally scheduled.

On the agenda is the Queen's Speech (equivalent to the president's address in India's Parliament), which is drafted by the ruling party and mentions its policies.

By forming a government with the DUP, many commentators have argued the Conservatives would undermine this arrangement and risk the peace process.

Another scoundrel in the eyes of Eurosceptics, the European Parliament Brexit co-ordinator's role will grow as the talks near their end because MEPs will have a veto over any final deal.

This will give Theresa May's Government the initial confidence it needs to pass the Queen's Speech programme.

The Irish government statement said there was agreement on the importance of a functioning executive in the context of the Brexit negotiations due to start next week.

The British Brexit Secretary David Davis and the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier will hold talks in Brussels.

She promoted one of them, Damian Green, a longtime ally, to first secretary of state and kept in place Philip Hammond, the chancellor of the Exchequer, whom she had meant to fire, according to news reports. "So I'm afraid to say there is no goodwill towards her".

She pointed out that the DUP had just achieved its greatest ever election result and said the party would not countenance anything regarding Sinn Féin deciding who the DUP's nominee for first minister should be.

"Look at what the Tories (Conservatives) have managed to do to the United Kingdom in the space of just one year, firstly calling a divisive and reckless European Union referendum. then having lost that gamble pursuing a hard Brexit path", Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said.
