Andre Ward stops Sergey Kovalev to win light heavy rematch
19 Junio 2017, 12:51 | Gerardo Tarin
I looked at those punches that were allegedly low, and even spoke to (HBO's) Tom Hauser, who sent me a video, saying one of those punches was low but it was very hard to determine because Kovalev's arm was by his waist, and the punch looks like it comes up underneath and hits on the belt line.
"I couldn't believe it, I could win", Kovalev said. "I don't have any more patience remaining left".
Sergey has since deleted the video meme, but the backlash was swift from those who said that making it sound as if Ward - a devout Christian - dropped nonstop n-bombs was racist.
He went after Kovalev, finally finishing him off in a neutral corner with the disputed body shots. "Heavyweight? I dream big, and everything is possible when you have God".
'How much more hurt was he than Ward in round two last fight. Ward won a unanimous decision, but the scores were 114-113 across the board.
"We're going to shut the door on this", Ward, 33, said, "and take all doubt and all questions off the table".
Ward's assault didn't slow down until he had Kovalev pinned against the ropes and as he bent over from the succession of punches, the referee had no choice but to stop the fight at 2:29 of the eighth round. Virgil Hunter, Ward's trainer who had a tart argument with Kovalev's trainer John David Jackson after the fight, was justifiably expansive. I take nothing from him.
An impressive performance from Ward was marred by the ending to the fight, with a succession of borderline low blows securing the stoppage after he had initially rocked the Russian with a powerful straight right to the head. I know it sounds insane when you're light-heavyweight and I'm not the biggest light-heavyweight. I'm expecting his best. "I can't think that way. That's the beauty of rematches in this sport". "I could tell he was getting a little exhausted but he was still in there, was still fighting". Kovalev said he was gassed because he over-trained. The match was highly anticipated and lived up to the hype with Ward winning a controversial decision. But there were a couple of times when I was crying, because I thought we'd have to postpone the fight.
The fight served as a rematch to the bout that the two men had back on November 19, 2016 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Ward hopes he made his case this time.
That said, the Russian was bedraggled, gassed out and offering little resistance.
"He's had every excuse in the book, and has been talking non-stop since the first fight,"Ward said".
Andre Ward (right) was all smiles and thanked God for the victory. The Ward-Kovalev promotion was struggling for traction anyway.
Two fights with Andre Ward have not only tamed Kovalev.
"We respect Kovalev on what he has done and what he's capable of doing", Hunter said. "Sergey kept getting hit low and they didn't do anything about it". To Ward's credit, he bounced back in the seventh and, in a precursor to how the fight would end, went for the body.
Koepka wins US Open title
In fact he made a mad rush to the finish, birding 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18 to enter the clubhouse only a shot back. That merely added to the drama, though, as a crowded field sorted itself out in a taut U.S.
