Trunk slammers: Top three miss US Open cut

18 Junio 2017, 04:29 | Gerardo Tarin

"We're separated by a floor".

What a day for Justin Thomas.

The one-under-par total was a substantial improvement on Thursday's six-over-par 78, but with the cut projected at one-over-par, it was too little, too late for the popular Northern Irishman. He went from pouring putts into the center of the cup to burning the edges, and his 39 on the back nine cost him the lead, though not his chances of breaking through for that first major.

England's Tommy Fleetwood has been putting beautifully at the U.S. Moments later, he began a run of five straight birdies that put him right where he wanted to be going into the weekend.

"Obviously, an awesome day, " said Thomas, a Louisville native who played his college golf at Alabama. I knew going into it that it was either going to go in or be close to going in. I've just got to keep going.

"It was a good display, all my own fault, of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did on 14", Casey said.

An eagle that completed a 9-under 63, the lowest score to par in the history of this tournament.

And it is another milestone in a remarkable start to 2017 for Thomas.

Thomas has had a breakout season on the PGA Tour, winning three times before February, including consecutive titles in Hawaii in January.

Yet Johnson was forced to bide his time for the next six holes, unable to convert the few birdie chances that came his way.

"A lot of young guys, lot of great players", he said. "I got in a hazard on one".

American Chez Reavie also scored 65 on a day when Erin Hills failed for the most part to bare its fangs.

Getting a weekend off are the world's top three ranked players; number one Dustin Johnson, number two Rory McIlroy and number three Jason Day, who all missed the cut leaving a decidedly unglamorous leaderboard.

With the picturesque par-72 course set up at a monstrous 7,845 yards, Erin Hills had been expected to live up to the US Open's billing of being the toughest test in golf. "Whether it's 20-under or 20-over, as long as [USGA officials] want a good tournament and an action-packed leaderboard".

Thomas finished in style, and it had nothing to do with his hot pink trousers. He landed the ball perfectly on the fringe of the green and it rolled just past the hole for a makeable eagle putt. This is his third try at the U.S. Open and the first time he has made the cut.

"If you're not hitting it well, it's still hard to hit it under par, " Thomas said.

Miller first saw Erin Hills last summer and watched enough coverage this week to detect something he couldn't recall from his era. If somebody does it tomorrow to win the U.S. Open by one, that's the specialness of my round. The scores are low, but we're playing well.
