Savannah's Harman looks for major breakthrough at US Open

18 Junio 2017, 02:51 | Dolorita Barahona

A four-under-par 68 left him at 10 under heading into the final today, two behind the lead.

Morgan was at 9-under 135 after two rounds and became the first player to reach 10-under par in the U.S. Open with a 30-foot birdie putt on the third hole of the third round.

Johnny Miller finished the 1973 U.S. Open with a 63 to win the championship.

Jordan Spieth sits just inside the cut-line at even-par through 16 holes, while playing partner and defending US Open champion Dustin Johnson is flirting with a missed cut at three-over. Thomas is tied for second with Tommy Fleetwood (68) and Brooks Koepka (68). He went from pouring putts into the center of the cup to burning the edges, and his 39 on the back nine cost him the lead, though not his chances of breaking through for that first major.

Brooke Henderson, the leader after each of the first two rounds, had a 67 to drop into a tie for second with Lee-Anne Pace (61), Sung Hyun Park (62) and Jenny Shin (63).

The U.S. Open didn't seem to faze him, and he delivered a variety of big shots that led to his sensational finish. "He's upstairs and I'm down in the basement area, so it shouldn't get too physical".

The round was littered with some wonderful approach shots and long putts as Thomas took advantage of overnight rains to move to 11-under, one shot off the lead by Brian Harman. None of the top 18 has won a major, making it very likely this will be the seventh straight major to crown a first-time victor.

It's no secret that the U.S. Open is created to separate the men from the boys.

Another player to watch out for on Sunday is Patrick Reed, whose Saturday 65 was the low round of the day until Thomas' 63.

"Tomorrow will be fun and special, just going around here and being a part of this first U.S. Open here in Wisconsin", Stricker said.

On the longest course ever for a major, the cut was the lowest at the U.S. Open since 1990.

"I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said.

But the Englishman now has a share of the lead at the U.S. Open. Schauffele went 26 consecutive holes without a bogey until he rammed his long birdie putt on No. 9 about 12 feet by the hole and narrowly missed the par putt. When I get it going, I don't fear, like I used to. He says he feels comfortable on the course, and now that he spent Saturday booking his place in history, he wants to follow a similar fate on Sunday. Johnson capped off this collective failure with a late collapse on the back nine at Erin Hills, making three bogeys over a five-hole stretch and closing with a 73. Fowler shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to remain in contention for his first major championship.

Positioned 299 yards from the pin on the par-5 18th, and needing to hole out the shot to make the weekend, he lashed at a 3-wood that hit about pin high, then rolled off the back of the green.

Harman is playing in just his eighth major, and it's only the third time he has made the cut.

Triple-bogeys have a way of sinking a round, but somehow that wasn't the situation for Paul Casey on Friday at the U.S. Open.
