Prime Minister breaks promise to keep Grenfell Tower survivors in the area

18 Junio 2017, 04:33 | Crisanna Felipe

The fire in the block in west London burned for hours, and authorities fear that the official death toll of 30 is likely to rise, with numerous dead unlikely ever to be identified.

Previously, the Metropolitan Police had confirmed 30 people had been killed in the inferno; the announcement Saturday almost doubles that number.

Elsewhere, more than 300 people held a rally in front of Kensington Town Hall, calling for answers into Wednesday's blaze which destroyed the high-rise building and cost at least 30 lives.

Police said the death toll could change.

Some footage from inside the tower may be released tomorrow to show the difficulties fire crews are facing, Cundy said at the press conference. Residents want answers on why the fire spread so quickly, trapping numerous estimated 600 residents.

More than 200 firefighters worked to put out the blaze, with the last pockets of flames extinguished 24 hours after the incident began, Cotton said.

A speech given on Thursday near the tower by London Mayor Sadiq Khan was interrupted by hecklers, who said that the fire "could have been prevented".

"Everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the government is there for them at this awful time-and that is what I am determined to provide", she said.

One of her closest allies, Damian Green, defended May on Saturday, adding that a team would go to the area to answer questions from residents. While the cause of the blaze has not been officially identified, residents had been complaining about conditions in the building since it was remodeled in 2016, but were rebuffed.

British Prime Minister Theresa May promised victims of a London fire that left at least 30 dead that a five-million-pound ($6.5 million) support package would be created, the media reported.

Victims, volunteers and community leaders from the Grenfell Tower disaster arrive in Downing Street.

"During recent visits in Manchester and London, I have been profoundly struck by the immediate inclination of people throughout the country to offer comfort and support to those in desperate need", the queen said in a statement.

He reiterated there is a police investigation underway and that it will look at how the fire spread. They took umbrage with May's handling of the disaster.

So, the residents are saying that the final death toll could be much higher than what British authorities are giving.

The 91-year-old monarch said it is "difficult to escape a very somber mood" on what is normally a day of celebration.

Protesters gathered to call for help for the residents of the burned building, and the BBC reports that dozens of people "stormed Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall with a list of demands".
