McIlroy dismisses Twitter criticism after US Open exit

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, continuing six years of US Open struggles, shot a 78.
The Spaniard posted a one-under 71 in Friday's second round for a three-under-par total of 141 as the afternoon wave of players were beginning their rounds at Erin Hills. "I couldn't possibly shoot any higher than I did". "So I just ripped it a little bit".
"It feels good", said the 39-year-old, who has recorded three consecutive top-six finishes in the Masters but whose sole top-10 finish in 13 US Open appearances came at Oakmont a decade ago.
It's the most players tied after 36 holes of the US since 1974 at Winged Foot, only the names from 43 years ago resonate more than today - Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. The top 60 and ties qualify for the final 36 holes. Compatriots Jason Day and Adam Scott are both set to have the weekend off.
On the longest course ever for a major, the cut was the lowest at the U.S. Open since 1990.
"I have no expectations", he said. "But as we all know, this game's all about putting".
"I felt like I've been playing pretty well all week and didn't have quite the numbers to show for it", Thomas continued. "And I'm kind of going out there and just doing it, and letting it go".
But the second-ranked player in the world still has a lot of ground to make up at Erin Hills. I'm looking forward to it very much.
Niebrugge, Talor Gooch and Kevin Dougherty, who each played at Oklahoma State, were grouped together in the first two rounds. Jon Rahm. Justin Rose. Willett had a bad opening round, shooting 9-over 81. That's not going to get it done (to say the least) on a course like Erin Hills. It's a big, big golf course, with long rough and all that stuff, but it lets you play.
McIlroy's performance might not be that surprising given that he's played only six PGA Tour events this year and missed most of the last month with a rib injury.
"I need to get competitive rounds, a card in my hand, " he said.
"I'm not saying it's going to happen this week, but I've been playing well this year, and I've contended at Majors before".
"When I got here Friday, put a lot of work in - not a lot, but I tried to pace myself".
McIlroy has a hectic schedule again.
"The majors have a different feel and sound to the roars and to hear the crowd go insane when I holed that putt on 18 was really cool", said Thomas, whose back-to-back wins in Hawaii in January included an opening 59 in the Sony Open. But he missed his first cut at a major since the 2012 PGA Championship.
"It doesn't need to be too much of a change for this golf course to play pretty hard", said Casey.
McIlroy however, who is returning from a hip and back injury, put a courageous face on his second consecutive missed cut at a US Open following his exit at the halfway stage in 2016.
Thomas' 3-wood from 299 yards banked into the front of the green and trickled purposely towards the pin on the 18th hole at the U.S. Open.
Former US Open winners Jordan Spieth and Martin Kaymer were big names who collapsed.
