London fire: 58 presumed dead, say police

"Nowadays, we would not dream of building towers to the standards of the 1970s, but their inhabitants still have to live with that legacy". All the rest are homeless.

He said police had started a criminal investigation but there was nothing to suggest "that the fire had been started deliberately". Everyone displaced will be housed nearby within three weeks, she promised.

Stuart Cundy, commander of the Metropolitan Police, expects the death toll to rise, but he has thus far declined to comment on any details of the missing people due to the complexity and difficulty of the identifying process.

Some of the anger stems from reports that Grenfell Tower had no central sprinkler system and was built with flammable materials that residents told the government needed to be fixed. He says "my heart goes out to those affected". A new sign was put up, removing that detail. "My government will do whatever it takes to help those affected, get justice and keep our people safe", she said.

While the blaze has prompted an outpouring of generosity, with many people donating provisions and clothes, it has also unleashed rage at the authorities as the charred tower was cast as a deadly symbol of a deeply divided society.

When the prime minister visited the west London site of the fire on Thursday she spoke only to emergency services.

The Grenfell Tower in west London, built in the 1970s and renovated several times, contains 120 homes.

Major roads near the stricken building were open Saturday. We know that there are still bodies of those who died inside the building and we want to return those people to their families as soon as we possibly can.

May noted that she was aware of the situation and ordered immediate response to support the people on the ground.

"Everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the government is there for them at this awful time-and that is what I am determined to provide", she said.

Fifty-eight people are missing and presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower disaster, the officer in charge of the investigation has said.

Hector Bellerin, who is in Spain's team at UEFA's European Under-21 Championship, made the announcement on Twitter, saying "please support in any way".

Her statement came the same day the British Police said at least 58 were feared to have died in the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Dozens are still missing. The queen was born in April but celebrates in June.

NHS England says the injured are being treated in four London hospitals.

And sorrow is quickly turning to anger over whether the building met fire and safety regulations.

"It will look at the building itself".
