Justin Thomas sets single round record at US Open

18 Junio 2017, 04:16 | Gerardo Tarin

It never has been.

With the course playing like it is, no score is insurmountable, and the U.S. Open looks like it will be anyone's to win on Sunday.

Thomas' lead heading into Sunday's final round?

This isn't like most Opens.

Father's Day marks what could be the final day of the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills, and from the merchandise tent to the actual tournament itself, some worked to make it a weekend devoted to dad.

Amazingly it could have been even better if not for bogeys on the fourth and 10th, as well as a missed eagle putt from six feet on the 15th after he had driven the green on the 288-yard par four. It led to an eagle to close out his 63. Rickie Fowler is at 10 under.

Then there was the Par-5 18th hole. "To have a chance tomorrow is just going to be great", said Thomas. And he wasn't through.

His 13-foot putt for birdie at the par-5 seventh moved him to 3 under for the day and 4 under for the tournament. Willett shot a 9-over 81 in the first round and then withdrew before his tee time in the second round.

World number three Day, needing a miracle to get back into contention after his opening 79 carded a three-over-par 75, leaving him 10 over and way outside the projected cutline.

Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard.

Miller also seemed convinced that Thomas' number would do nothing to alter the historic place of his 63 at Oakmont. Tom Kite won his only major. The course played to a par of 71 that day, meaning Miller was 8-under. "So I did a really good job of staying present, staying focused on the next shot". No one had a chance.

Oosthuizen, who finished second in the US Open in 2015 and lost a play-off for the Open a month later, had to settle for a 68 to finish four under par. Furyk closed with a 72. Although his afternoon was full of highlights, two stick out above the rest.

Scheffler's iron shot, from 218 yards in the middle of the 18th fairway, landed short in a bunker, triggering an adventurous triple-bogey 8 that dealt a wet-sock finish to what had been a glorious third round, highlighted by a front-nine 32. The soft Black Course allowed players to take dead aim, and Barnes opened with rounds of 67 and 65.

Westwood had bogeyed the third and fifth before a superb tee shot on the 239-yard sixth - which played as the most hard hole on Thursday - set up a birdie from 18 feet. Fleetwood was poised to take the lead until his pitch to the 18th wasn't strong enough and his next shot went beyond the flag and down the slope some 70 feet away. He won the first two tournaments of this year, both in Hawaii.

The Kentucky native became the youngest player to shoot 50 on the US PGA Tour during the first round of his Sony Open victory in January. Jordan Spieth was even par through 12 holes and going nowhere.

Maybe the real U.S. Open will finally make a cameo on Sunday when winds are expected to reach 15 miles per hour about the time the final groups take the field, but then nothing else has gone to plan at the 117th edition.

Winning the U.S. Open is something he has thought about many times, the 26-year-old from Southport said. Fowler shot a 73 and was still very much in the hunt at a second straight major.

Four others are within three shots as the third round winds down.
