Paul Casey rode a roller-coaster to the second-round clubhouse lead at the U.S. Open on Friday, surviving a hair-raising trip that included a gut-wrenching triple-bogey and a thrilling run of five straight birdies at the Erin Hills course in Wisconsin. You've still got to make a score.
Nearly an inch of rain fell on the course overnight, but scoring conditions were far from easy as the likes of former champion Jordan Spieth and Lee Westwood tried to move into contention.
"Yeah, 12 under, I'd have about a 10-shot lead in most Opens", he said.
"Guess what? We get to go home today because Daddy played poorly", Day said to his son, Dash, before walking over to sign autographs. Those golfers would be Jamie Lovemark, Thursday's leader Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes.
Another warm, dry day is drying out the course during the second round of the U.S. Open, and the players are noticing a difference.
The hottest man on the course was unquestionably Hideki Matsuyama, who bounced back from his first-round 74 by birdieing six of his first eight holes on Friday to sit five off the lead.
However, with the overnight rain improving scoring conditions, Reed overcame some testing pin positions to card four birdies and a bogey on the front nine, before firing four birdies in five holes from the 12th. He's tied with Brooks Koepka, who birdied the 18th to get there, and England's Tommy Fleetwood, who bogeyed the last to fall out of a share for the lead.
Koepka raced out to nine under early in his second round, but dropped two shots on his back nine on his way to a 70.
"I'd like to shoot a good round here, you know, I'm on the verge of it I feel like", Stricker said. "I drove the ball well, my irons were good. But I'm looking forward to getting the job done".
If his hot pink trousers were not enough, Thomas finished in style.
He hit a 3-wood from 310 yards on the par-5 18th to set up his eagle putt.
"We're going to have a good time", Fowler said.
Taking the sting out of not having eight of the world's top 12 players around for the weekend, Justin Thomas shot a record-breaking 63 on Saturday.
"The finish was awesome".
"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", he said.
He might need one at this rate. And instead of leaving Erin Hills fretting about how much better he could've done, he was thankful it wasn't any worse.
But Thomas is no stranger to records. "I mean, it's all pretty self-explanatory, I guess, in terms of what it means". "It was downwind to where I knew if I hit it solid, I could definitely get it there".
"It is always cool to be part of some sort of history in golf". The boyish 24-year-old shot a first-round 59 at the Sony Open in Hawaii to become the youngest among the eight players who have broken 60 on the PGA Tour.

He landed the ball perfectly on the fringe of the green and it rolled just past the hole for a makeable eagle putt. He then hacked out his fifth out sideways and now some 52-feet from the hole from where he chipped and two putted.
Fowler ready to break major duck
But Thomas' lead, which sat at two shots after he eagled 18, lasted only temporarily as Fleetwood and Harman each birdied Nos. Day, however, said he felt ready to go before flaming out early. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said.

Casey also had a triple bogey on No. 14 in the second round, but he finished with a 1-under 71 and a share of the 36-hole lead. Fowler finished with six birdies and just two bogeys but hit only 8-of-14 fairways and 11-of-18 greens in regulation.
