Otto Warmbier at a news conference in the months before his sentencing in 2016
Doctors described 22-year-old Otto Warmbier's condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness" after they examined him upon his return from North Korea.
- It took months of "quiet diplomacy", a change in US presidents and an American diplomat's extraordinary, secret visit to Pyongyang to bring Otto Warmbier home.
An American college student who was being detained in North Korea for a minor crime has returned home in a coma, and everyone wants to know why.
Warmbier'srelease coincided with basketball star Dennis Rodman's latest visit to North Korea, though Michael Anton, a usa national security spokesman, toldCNN there is no connection between the two. Kanter said doctors have very little information about Warmbier's care in North Korea, except they did get access to images of his brain from April 2016.
According to the North Korean government, Otto Warmbier contracted botulism after his trial and fell into a coma after taking a sleeping pill.
Physicians at the University of Cincinnati Health Medical Center had the family's permission to release the details of Warmbier's condition at a news conference Thursday.
He was given a 15-year prison sentence for attempting to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel.
Mr Warmbier said the family was "extremely grateful for their efforts and concern". However, Warmbier's parents and leading medical experts aren't buying Pyongyang's explanation either.
"We were advised by the past administration to take a low profile", and not do anything to offend the North Koreans, Warmbier said.
There's no evidence of how Wambier was injured, but the brain damage looks like what happens when someone's heart stops for a long period of time, doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said.
"It is a family-focused place where people take care of each other", she said.
Fred Warmbier called his son's return bittersweet.
Kanter and fellow University of Cincinnati physicians Brandon Foreman and Jordan Bonomo said they saw no sign of active botulism poisoning.
Warmbier said Otto went into a coma the day after he was sentenced.
The most important diagnostic test conducted, doctors said, showed that Otto had extensive loss of brain tissue in all regions of the brain.
There has been wide speculation that Warmbier was mistreated during his time in North Korea.
Then in May, Yun met in the Norwegian capital of Oslo with senior officials from North Korea's Foreign Ministry.
The father of an American college student who was imprisoned in North Korea and was returned to his home state of OH in a coma says the family is "adjusting to a different reality".
The student's father also criticized the previous administration of Barack Obama for not having done more for their son. He accused the North Korean government of luring Americans with adventurous spirits - such as his son - into the country using Chinese travel agencies who assure safe travel.
The State Department secured Warmbier's release at President Donald Trump's direction.
The State Department is continuing to discuss three other detained Americans with North Korea.
