Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition, but his vital signs have "stabilized" two days after being shot during a congressional baseball practice on Wednesday, hospital officials announced Friday.

Scalise was still in critical condition Thursday night after another surgery, "but has improved in the last 24 hours", according to a statement from the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Under the bright glare of the national spotlight, the congressional baseball game was transformed on Thursday a day after the shooting of majority whip Steve Scalise and three others at a practice session for the Republican team.

Doctor Sava described Scalise's shot to his left hip as a devastating "trans-pelvic gunshot wound" from a high-velocity rifle.

Members of the Republican team pray before the Democrats and Republicans face off in the annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park in Washington, U.S., June 15, 2017. The crowd chanted "USA!"

The first pitch was thrown by one of the two heroes of the shooting, member of the Capitol Police David Bailey, who along with colleague Crystal Griner are credited with taking down the gunman.

The game went ahead as scheduled Thursday, in an emotional display of bipartisan unity.

Three others were injured by the gunfire from suspected shooter James Hodgkinson, who was killed by police.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

The morning after visiting Scalise in the hospital, Trump said the congressman's challenges are "more difficult" than first thought.

Close friends say they are confident Scalise will pull through.

"It seems like you are going to have every camera in the country there, even internationally", said Republican starting pitcher Mark Walker of North Carolina.

Scalise was wounded when a gunman opened fire at a GOP lawmaker baseball practice Wednesday morning.

President Donald Trump sent a message of encouragement, which was shown on the stadium scoreboard prior to the game.

Both Republican and Democratic leaders at the game encouraged a sense of unity in the wake of the shooting during an otherwise politically rancorous time in Washington when the parties are sharply divided over healthcare legislation and investigations of the members of the Trump administration.

Speaking earlier Friday in Miami, Trump said Scalise "took a bullet for all of us" when he was shot.

"Stories that aren't really told or reported on", Shimkus said. "I can't wrap my head around it", she said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time". "Lord, surround our lawmakers with the shields of your protection and favor ... you know better than we what lies ahead for our lives".

A Washington Metropolitan Police Department report says the officer was manning a traffic checkpoint when the driver failed to obey repeated orders to stop.
