Congressional Baseball Game breaks records for fundraising ticket sales

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game.

The vicious and horrific attack we saw Wednesday in Alexandria at the Republican team's practice was nothing short of a direct assault on the institution we all serve and a deranged attempt to disrupt our democracy through violence.

The game, held at Nationals Park. has been a congressional tradition for more than a century. Just less than 25,000 people attended Nationals Park to watch the annual ritual.

The crowd was a mix of Democrats and Republicans. Five people were injured, including second baseman and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who is still in critical condition.

A list of Republican lawmakers was found on Hodgkinson's body, CBS News reported, citing an unidentified United States official.

Richmond compared Scalise to a "little Chihuahua" because he is "very persistent and strong", adding that he would miss the Republican's banter at the game.

The shootout on a Virginia baseball field that injured Congressman Steve Scalise and others reminds politicians they are all on the same team. Ivanka Trump and Trump adviser KellyAnne Conway were spotted at home plate and the Republican dugout. Organizers said Thursday that they had already raised over $1 million for charity and sold more than 20,000 tickets. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".

Sava also gave an update on Capitol Police Special Agent Crystal Griner, who sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle during the shooting. It was his 11th time suiting up for the game, but he says this game was different.

David Miller, who saw the shooting, described a scene in which some players were far enough away from the gunman to run for shelter, while others were pinned down in the middle of the ball field.

Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch, and Barth also showed up for the game, walking with crutches. He was batted in by Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif. Mick Mulvaney, previously a Rock Hill Republican congressman until being tapped as White House budget chief, couldn't technically play on the team as he once had. For Murphy, it was the Yard Goats. They sat next to each other at the game above the first-base dugout, as a show of friendship across the aisle. From the Democratic side of the stadium, there were boos. "Those aren't good odds", Brooks said. "But for the grace of God, it could have happened at the Democratic practice". Lawmakers, including many of those who were at the practice, praised the decision.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

Lucee Laursen of La Crosse, Wisconsin, interning in the capital for a nonprofit, said, "It's showing that we might have differences in political spheres but we come together for a good cause".

"The challenge now is to see if we can confine it so it does not spill into hatred".
