If Rosensteinrecuses himself, supervision of the Mueller probe would be left to Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, a Harvard law graduate who clerked for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and ran the Office of Legal Policy at the Justice Department. That authority clearly lies with the attorney general-or in this case, because the attorney general has recused himself, with the deputy attorney general.
"And second, if the president thinks he can fire Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will shut down the investigation, he's in for a rude awakening".
It was not clear whether the president was basing his tweet on direct knowledge, or on reports this week that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether he obstructed justice by firing Mr Comey last month amid the Russian Federation investigation.
At a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing last week, Coats and Rogers refused to say whether Trump asked them to intervene in the investigation, which is also examining whether the Trump campaign team colluded with Russian Federation during last year's presidential campaign.
Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, did not comment on the Post report when reached by Fox News, but did say that the special counsel's office "has undertaken stringent controls to prohibit unauthorized disclosures that deal severely with any member who engages in this conduct".
Rosenstein, as you'll recall, wrote a memo before James Comey was sacked criticizing the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's handling of the Hillary Clintonemail case.
Several news reports said Mueller plans to interview key USA national security officials about Trump's comments seeking an end to the investigation of contacts his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, had with Russia's ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak.
He said on Fox Business in April that "Comey was very, very good to Hillary Clinton", and said "if he weren't she would be, right now, going to trial". According to James Comey, President Trump tried to ask for loyalty from the ex-FBI director and urged to see that he can "let go" of the Russian Federation investigation on Trump's administration.
Trump tweeted. "I can go around them".
A day or two later, Trump called Coats and Rogers separately, asking them to publicly deny the Trump campaign coordinated in any way with Russian Federation, the Post reported.
US President Donald Trump speaks about the shootings in Alexandria, Virginia, from the White House in Washington, US, June 14, 2017. It's the phony justifications his administration gave for the firing, it's Trump'sown belated confirmation that a major factor in the firing was the Russian Federation investigation, and it's the troubling pattern of Trump's attempts to interfere with investigations into his associates before the firing.
In another tweet, Trump called it "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!".
Trump did not directly address the allegations that he is being probed for possibly obstructing justice - a potentially impeachable offense. Trump said on Twitter, calling the probe into him a "Witch Hunt".
