Darjeeling unrest: Protestors, police clash

18 Junio 2017, 11:33 | Dolorita Barahona

Three supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) were killed when security personnel opened fire on protestors in Darjeeling district of West Bengal state, India on Saturday.

Darjeeling: Darjeeling is bracing for another shutdown as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership has chose to hold a protest rally with the bodies of two persons allegedly killed during clashes on Saturday.

"We are ready but not under the current situation", she said.

Some police personnel and GJM activists were injured in the clash, the police said.

The immediate provocation for the violence seemed to be an early-morning police raid on GJM leader Binay Tamang's house, two days after security forces broke into GJM president Bimal Gurung's Patlewas residence.

"After the Bengal government tried to crush a peaceful protest by sending its police force to the hills, I see less chances of any compromise with the Bengal government", Sharma said.

Coming down heavily on the GJM violence, Banerjee said: "This is a deep-rooted conspiracy".

Banerjee slammed the GJM supporters for "insulting" the national flag. A vehicle was also set on fire. Several woman police personnel have also been deployed.

"The state government is indulging in politics of witch-hunting", Giri, the GJM general secretary, said. Official sources said that troops were patrolling in the entire hills.

While Bimal Shashanker from Goke Busty and Sunil Rai from Kainjalay died in police firing in Singmari in Darjeeling, Mahesh Gurung was shot during a protest rally at Ghoom.

The Bengal Opposition parties blamed Mamata for igniting the situation in Darjeeling through her "aggressive all-devouring policy" and for allowing the situation to gradually slip out of hand thereafter by trying to handle the situation with force.

The state administration denied the GJM charge, saying the police never opened fire. "We can not tolerate this hooliganism", Sharma said.

Despite heavy security, there has been a spate of arson attacks around Darjeeling carried out by suspected supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) who are demanding a separate state. There is an worldwide border and state border.

As the GJM shutdown entered its sixth day, the party called for a 12-hour strike in Dooars on Sunday. Asked about Mamata's request not to encourage the protesters, Rajnath said: "We appeal to all to maintain peace". She said tourism is the backbone of the Hills' economy and if the tourists' footfalls decrease, the Hills would starve.

The famed toy-train service of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has been suspended in view of the strike.

The GJM supporters in Darjeeling protesting against CM Mamta Banerjee's decision to make Bengali a compulsory subject to be taught in state schools up to Class 10 took a new turn with Morcha chief signalling to accelerate the protests while raising fresh demands for a separate Gorkhaland.
