Amazon to acquire Whole Foods in $13.7B deal

18 Junio 2017, 02:25 | Benedicto Grullon

As Amazon moves into the grocery business with its $13.7 billion purchase of Whole Foods Market, the online retailer might meet resistance from some dedicated shoppers reluctant to buy food on the internet.

The deal would give Amazon control of 430-plus U.S. Whole Foods stores, almost all of which are in neighborhoods more affluent and younger than America as a whole, noted David Portalatin, the NPD Group's vice president of food industry analysis.

Some say online grocery shopping will never work.

Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a report on Friday that Whole Foods "creates an entry point to drug delivery" and provides the necessary real estate. In the fiscal year 2016, the Company had sales of approximately $16 billion and has more than 460 stores in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

"It's convenience, right? We all live a busy, hectic life", Bradford said.

When Amazon.com Inc. completes its acquisition of Whole Foods Market Inc., chief executive officer Jeff Bezos will try to keep the grocer's reputation for premium fresh foods while cutting prices to shed its "Whole Paycheck" image. Whole Food shareholders still have to approve the purchase, as do regulators.

Many like the fast and convenient service Amazon provides but others are asking at what cost. The deal on the surface seems valuable for stakeholders in both companies. Although Amazon's plans for Whole Foods is not clear, the acquisition has some wondering what will happen to the chain's existing stores.

"You never know where it comes from", she said.

So your quinoa and goat cheese might get a little cheaper.

Whole Foods sent a letter to customers after the merger announcement, calling the agreement a new chapter in Whole Foods' history and an incredible opportunity.

Will this change how I buy my groceries?

The bombshell news caused grocery store stocks to dip.

In December, Amazon opened a grocery store in Seattle with no checkout line.

But Stone expects that Amazon might find a way to integrate some of the systems found at the GO store.

That model could expand, Cohen said. It also charges customers delivery fees.

That's in part because most shoppers prefer buying groceries, and especially fresh foods, in person. We hope that won't be the case with this proposed acquisition of Whole Foods.

Instacart is a grocery delivery firm which launched in 2012. And Alexa, the Amazon voice assistant program, will certainly be involved somehow.

Yes, we'll continue to see prepared foods in demand. You point out that 24 percent of millennials bought something from Whole Foods previous year. "That is the reality today at Amazon, and it will no doubt become the reality at Whole Foods", said UFCW President Marc Perrone in an email.
