The mighty recovery of Paul Casey puts him in US Open mix

Canadian Adam Hadwin seen on the 16th hole tied a U.S. Open record with six birdies in a row in his opening round on Thursday at Erin Hills in Hartford Wisc

Mary Ruediger, 45, was visiting her parents who live along an access road to the golf course and spotted the blimp going down. He kept it in the short grass, the secret to Erin Hills that wouldn't appear to be that hard with some of the widest fairways for this major. But his five-over finish was well short of the one-over cut, the lowest in U.S. Open history. Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf shot 7-under 63s at Baltusrol Golf Club in 1980. They were three shots clear of anyone else.

And it doesn't stop there.

McIlroy and Day were left with too much to do after terrible first rounds, while Johnson - who was looking to become the first man in 28 years to retain the U.S. Open title - followed his opening 75 with a 73. The PGA Tour rookie spent part of the second round sharing the lead.

Attribute that to the Wisconsin weather.

Per Fox 6 News, the Washington County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the site of the 117th U.S. Open to respond to reports of a death on the grounds.

It was the ideal recipe for low scoring, provided the ball was kept in the short grass.

It didn't for Rory McIlroy, either.

That was the score after the first round of the 117th U.S. Open Championship on Thursday as many in the field took advantage of relatively benign conditions to tame the vaunted Erin Hills. He did sneak in four birdies on the day, but five bogeys and two astonishing triples took him far out of contention. Casey eagled the Par-5, 608-yard first hole and tallied six birdies. That led to a double bogey, which hurt him as badly as making only one birdie.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson probably didn't feel so badly by the end of a most peculiar day.

For one, the courses themselves are traditionally structured to challenge golfers with a high degree of difficulty.

"You play 54 holes around here before the golf tournament, I felt really, really comfortable", said McIlroy, who won this event in 2011.

"It was a good display, all my own fault, but a good display of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course", he said. But aside from that memorable triumph, his record in the US Open has made grim reading.

The world number 14, teeing off on the 10th hole, made a solid start, opening with a par.

Matsuyama and Reavie each shot a 7-under 65 in the second round of the U.S. Open.

There were as many amateurs who broke par as players in the top 10 in the world - two each.

"If I can get through to the weekend, I can slowly edge my way back in; you really don't have to do too much on the weekend of a US Open to move up the leaderboard". But I think they're definitely getting a lot speedier, a lot faster.

"I was sticking to the same gameplan, I was doing the same things", said Hadwin, of Abbotsford, B.C. "And I've been very light on competitive rounds this year, and it's just a matter of getting into a good round of golf now". You've still got to make a score. We don't even talk about it. "So it's just nice to see it come along at the right time". The ultimate test. And three rounds remain to judge that.
