Grenfell: 30 confirmed dead as hope for surviours dwindle

It followed a separate, smaller protest at Kensington Town Hall, where residents tried to air their grievances to councillors.

Firefighters are still searching for victims in the 24-story Grenfell Tower that went up in flames early Wednesday.

They are among the 17 people who are said to have died in the incident.

"From a personal perspective, I really hope it isn't", Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy said responding to speculation reported in The Telegraph and other media outlets that the number of dead could exceed 100.

The Grenfell Action Group has spoken out about their repeated requests for improved safety in the building, writing on their blog that their "warnings fell on deaf ears".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Friday sent an open letter to May, demanding that she explain how she will support the community following the deadly fire.

Demonstrators pushed their way through an automatic door shouting 'We want justice!' and 'Killers!' as they clashed with security guards in the lobby.

The aluminium cladding, called Reynobond, was made by U.S. company Arconic and had a polyethylene core, which the reports said was slightly cheaper than fire-resistant models by the same manufacturer.

Police surrounded Ms May as she left the church, where a crowd of angry protesters had gathered, shouting "shame on you!" and "coward!"

Mr Cundy said the victims included one person who had died in hospital.

"We need answers and we need answers now", another man said through a megaphone. Some observers asked whether hazards in the Grenfell complex, which had 120 apartments that housed as many as 600 people, were ignored because its residents are mainly poor. "The bodies have been taken to a morgue, but more bodies remain in the building".

"I spent several hours yesterday talking to local residents around Grenfell Tower".

The fire broke out less than a week after a election in which May lost her parliamentary majority.

The criticism over the blaze has added to pressure on May who is trying to strike a deal with a Northern Irish party to stay in power. Her government is also due to launch hard Brexit talks with the European Union on Monday.

May eventually did visit the hospital and met with victims.

"When I spoke to the emergency services, they told me that the way this fire progressed, how it took hold of this building was rapid, it was ferocious and it was unexpected", May said. "One woman told me she had escaped in only her top and underwear".

Told there was a need for the public to hear her say something had gone badly wrong and the Government accepted responsibility, Mrs May said: "Something awful has happened".

She described seeing trapped residents crying out for help from their windows as the blaze increased in intensity. Former cabinet minister Michael Portillo said that decision amounted to a lack of "humanity".

"Many people have been saying for some time now, their concerns about the housing we're talking about now, but also other tower blocks around London".

Meanwhile, experts have said sprinklers could have been fitted in the tower but Nick Paget-Brown, the Tory leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said there was not a "collective view" among residents in favour of installing them.

The government said checks were now planned on tower blocks that have gone through a similar upgrade.
