Day done, McIlroy also likely to miss US Open cut

17 Junio 2017, 12:07 | Benedicto Grullon

What raises immediate questions about Erin Hills is the number of players under par, even with so many top stars struggling.

It opened the door for England veteran Paul Casey (71) to share honours atop a no-frills leaderboard with countryman Tommy Fleetwood, Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman (all 70) at seven-under after the second round at Erin Hills. Casey is tied with Rickie Fowler at 7 under for the lead.

"It's cool, but it's just the first round", Fowler said afterwards.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson made only one birdie in his round of 75.

Rory McIlroy has hit back at a suggestion by Steve Elkington that he was "bored" with golf after he missed the cut at the US Open for the second year in succession.

Day had never missed a cut at the US Open in six previous starts and suffered his first weekend away from the majors since the 2012 US PGA Championship.

American Rickie Fowler (T-5) owns four PGA Tour wins, including a dominating victory at the Players Championship in 2015. Everything was in good shape.

"It feels great. I came in this week with no expectations really at all", said the 22-year-old.

On a day with scoring more hard, Hadwin found his game to be a little off early in the round but he was able to grind out pars with great putting.

"I think with everything so large, your target is larger and your misses get even more extreme".

Day, at 10 over, said, "I mean, the scores were out there". If only he had hit the fairways.

Hideki Matsuyama had a solid showing at the Masters in April.

Ultimately, nobody was expecting Fowler to repeat the heroics of Thursday.

Holywood's McIlroy finished four under for the final six holes, which helped the four-time major victor post a one-under-par 71 in Wisconsin, but the damage was done in the first round as McIlroy hit six over to effectively end his chances at the second major of the year. "I thought it was about 30, 40 percent progress compared to exactly where I want to be, which is a hundred percent on".

"I felt the most calm I have in a major in a long time this week", said Day, who arrived last Friday. "To shoot a good round like today, I'm certainly looking forward to the weekend". After hitting 13 of 14 fairways Thursday, some admittedly "loose" swings Friday resulted in him hitting only seven fairways and missing eight greens in regulation. "I've never done this before".

Everyone expects the U.S. Open to get harder as the week goes on because it usually does.

"I had breakfast but it is a long walk out there and I just wanted to make sure I had enough food in the bag but I love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, just love them".

"When I got here Friday, put a lot of work in - not a lot, but I tried to pace myself. And I was proud I hung in there".

No matter. He shot 38 on his first nine but rallied for 33 on his second nine.

"With some incredible golf the next couple of days, you can make up a significant amount a strokes", he said.

It will be a different kind of moment, without the world's top three, and with the leading 12 having a combined zero major titles. And then he came up short of the 17th green and dropped one more shot that sent him home early to spend time with his newborn son. "It's a special weekend".

In retrospect, perhaps the missed cuts are not a total surprise - at least from McIlroy's standpoint.
