Shot US Congressman Scalise undergoes surgery

So it was welcome news Wednesday when Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the manager of the GOP's congressional baseball team, held a news conference with his Democratic counterpart, Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, to announce, "He and I both thought the game should go on".

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday, sent a video message that played at the start of the game. Scalise was hit, and crawled out of the infield, leaving a trail of blood, colleagues said.

"Authorities are continuing to investigate the crime, and the assailant has now died from his injuries", he said.

The GOP lawmakers' team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted.

"Everyone's getting a bunch of death threats right now", Representative Ruben Gallego, a Democrat, told The Los Angeles Times.

"I was there last night", he said.

A security detail accompanied Scalise to the field that morning - a factor many lawmakers at the scene insist saved their lives. Jeff Flake said Mika was the most seriously injured.

"I'm prayerful he will pull through, and I hope he does", Democrat Cedric Richmond said.

Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the apparent gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) first told media that a man had approached him and Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) to ask the question as the pair were getting into a auto. The man thanked him.

The shooting has brought members Congress together in some way.
