Illinois Native Who Shot Top GOP Congressman Had History of Arrests

The alleged gunman has been identified as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson III, from IL, reports The Washington Post. Hodgkinson was eventually shot by Scalise's security detail, which included members of the Secret Service and the Capitol Police.

Zachary Barth, staffer for Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), and Capitol Police agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey were also wounded in the attack, but their injuries are not life-threatening. He had been a vocal opponent of the Republican Party.

Those who knew him around Belleville have said nothing suggested he was capable of the attack on members of Congress, in spite of his often stated, very strong, and well-documented anti-Republican views. He ran a home inspection business until previous year, when he lost his license.

His Facebook page shows he was a fan of Vermont Sen.

The account called Bernie Sanders "a Candidate of a Lifetime" while expressing distrust of Hillary Clinton.

Sanders started out by saying he was just informed that the shooter "apparently" worked on his campaign as a volunteer, reports NPR News.

Local media also unearthed a 2012 photo of Hodgkinson protesting outside a downtown Belleville post office holding a sign that read, "Tax the Rich". "They don't deserve this, I don't deserve this, my daughters don't deserve all this".

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch sent a reporter to Hodgkinson's house.

In 2006, Hodgkinson was arrested on assault charges and threatening someone with a shotgun.

All the charges were later dismissed when none of his alleged victims appeared in court, the BBC reported.

Hodgkinson's weapons, a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 mm caliber (.30-caliber) rifle, were recovered at the scene, according to a joint statement issued Thursday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several state and local law enforcement agencies. When he went outside, he saw Hodgkinson shooting a rifle into or on a cornfield. Local police determined he had a valid license and asked him not to shoot off the gun in the area near other homes. "To me, he was just a nice guy", Mr Walsh said.

The deputy cautioned Hodgkinson about doing such shooting around homes, given that the rounds can travel up to a mile. "And I said 'There's houses over that way.' But I don't think I got though to him".

"If he were to give us some kind of indication that he was mental or if he was out there target practicing for some other reason, then we would have looked further", Watson said.
