DUP leader slams 'hyperbole' over gay rights policy

16 Junio 2017, 01:22 | Martinez Canez

Former Prime Minister John Major who was involved in talks with both sides of the Northern Irish conflict peace talks before handing over to Tony Blair has warned he has reservations about his party going into government with the DUP.

May would emerge as an honourable leader who understands that she only barely has a mandate to govern, but very strongly has a mandate to deliver on the one issue the public has been clear about.

He added: "It corrodes confidence in the negotiating process".

Ministers have already said that the Queen's Speech may have to be set back from its scheduled date of next Monday June 19, because of the ongoing negotiations. "Delay to deal with DUP means likely postponement of Queens speech; and possibly Brexit talks", BBC political reporter Norman Smith said on Twitter.

Sinn Fein's Stormont leader Michelle O'Neill said: "I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

"I will be making it very clear that any deal between the Tories and the DUP can not be allowed to undermine the Good Friday and subsequent agreements".

"If that's not possible, the Labour Party stands ready to offer strong and stable leadership in the national interest", Corbyn said.

"The DUP may never have the political arithmetic so favorable again so like the Conservatives, the DUP will want to avoid another election and will want to keep drinking in the political free bar that is available to it", Tonge said.

Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom and Ireland where same-sex marriage remains outlawed.

The deal is complicated by a row between the DUP and the pro-republican Sinn Fein party which led earlier this year to the collapse of the power-sharing Northern Ireland devolved assembly.

Theresa May desperately needs the Democratic Unionist Party's 10 seats to pass legislation.

May would remain the prime minister of the country while the DUP MPs would play a critical role in helping the Conservatives remain in power.

"Discussions are going well with the government", Foster said.

Theresa May is battling to survive in power at home and overseas: at home trying to build a Commons majority and in Europe starting Brexit negotiations.

The first round of talks, led by Brexit secretary David Davis and European Union chief negotiator Michel Barnier are expected to last three days.

Mrs May has come under pressure in the wake of the shock election result to moderate her approach to Brexit, with the loss of her majority seen as a rejection of her intention to take Britain out of the single market, exit the customs union and end freedom of movement from the continent.

A YouGov poll on Thursday found that the prime minister's favourability rating has plunged since the election from +10 in April to -34 today.
